Biography

Stew Henderson was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1954. He received a B.F.A. from the

Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford and an A.A. from Dean Junior College in Franklin,

Massachusetts. Upon graduating form college he apprenticed to sculptor Wolfgang Behl in

Greenfield MA. working on a commission for the town of Bloomfield CT. Henderson then moved to

New Orleans, LA. to serve as apprentice to kinetic sculptor Lin Emery. Stew and his wife Jody

moved to Maine in 1981, settling first in Belfast and currently in Northport. They have a son, Chris

and a daughter Lucy. In 1986 he received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Mr.

Henderson taught sculpture at Unity College in Unity ME. for 3 years and has given workshops on

installations in nature at Waterfall Arts in Montville, ME. From 1983-93 he wrote art reviews for two

publications in mid coast Maine. His work has appeared in several publications over the years

including being listed as one of Maine’s most collectible artists in Maine Home and Design Magazine.

Stew Henderson has had twenty solo shows of his work in addition to a mid career survey of his work

at the Hartford Art School in 2000. His work has also been included in over 60 group exhibitions.

In February 2020 Stew retired from the Colby College Museum of Art as Senior Preparator.
